The Martini Edition

The Martini Edition

Nothing will make you feel fancier than ordering a martini at a gorgeous bar. You can’t order one and not feel like dapper James Bond saying, “shaken not stirred.” There are several variations to a good martini that will eventually have you sounding like one of those people with a complicated coffee order at Starbucks.

When you become enough of a martini expert to be discerning when ordering, it exudes an extra layer of elegance.

One of our favorite things about martinis is the fact that they are carb free. The fact that they require no mixes, also makes it easy to enjoy on impulse once you have the basic ingredients on hand.

In this issue, beyond a few recipes and debates on what constitutes a ‘real martini,’ we will also fill your brain with inspiration on other ideas to help make living, decadent.

Hendricks Martini

3 oz of Hendricks Scottish gin.
- A tiny splash of extra dry vermouth. Around 1/8th of an ounce is ok; any more than 1/4 ounce and ... well, you know-banished from the kingdom.

Fill the cocktail shaker 3/4 full with ice. Pour the liquids over the ice. Shake until your hands get uncomfortably cold, then strain into a martini glass. Keep aiming for that ice cloud on top!

Garnish with a slice of fresh cucumber.

First, let's assume one works hard in the first place. Otherwise, you may well be a lazy, entitled little pup who should be looking for a job rather than reading about the Decadent Lifestyle to which you believe you are owed. But I digress . . .

I think there needs to be a good balance in life: work & relaxation, friends & family, prudence & indulgence. A splash of decadence for your and your loved ones is a welcomed reward.

Decadent living means occasionally taking the time to do the things you don't need to do, but want to do.

Red wine, brown liquor, cigars, and travel. Also, I'm always happy to find some prime ingredients to make a nice meal for my lovely lady whilst she dives into a bottle of Chablis!

Sitting on my deck with a some music playing, a cigar, and sipping on a glass of brown liquor. It's amazing how many of the Universe's problems can get solved after an hour or three of that.

A good book is an underrated escape - this seems especially true these days, with everyone glued to their smartphones and sporting a goldfish-level attention span.

A meal at a nice restaurant is always a welcome treat, as well.

To me the term decadent living evokes certain feelings- Comfort, relaxation, happiness, contentedness but when I think about it, I think it has more to do with having a choice. I think you are living your ideal life when you’re able to use your gifts and abilities in a way that allows you to escape the 9-to-5 rat race. And then there’s simple things, like being able to order good food delivered hot, right to your door when you’re tired after a long day of work and not in the mood to cook.

If I’m not being creative, I tend to get antsy. Painting is something I enjoy but honestly, playing video games with my kids is my favourite way to unwind. It’s a great way for us to connect and have a little fun.

I spend more money on art supplies than anyone should – that is definitely an area I splurge on excessively. Cheap paint requires you to use a lot more. At the end of the day you don’t actually save money when you’re buying cheap art supplies. I’ll also spend money on a good steak, I love a good steak.

Favourite Martini?

"I've got to be honest, I don't remember what a martini tastes like...

I’m sure you’re expecting me to say that I have a favourite expensive wine or something, but I’ve tried a thousand wines and they all taste similar to me. I’m pretty specific on the cuts of meat I like, so if there’s one place I’m willing to splurge, it’s on the right cut of meat. Nothing beats a ribeye. Camera equipment too- Budget equipment comes with a lot of limitations that hurt you over the long run. Being in media creation as a professional field, I definitely reserve funds for better quality camera equipment.

Life is hard! I’m a lucky guy and that my job is in a field I really love, but it still comes with a lot of long nights and early mornings. When you take some time to enjoy the things you really love, just makes life a little sweeter and the hard work feels worth it.

Deep breathing outside in nature. Doesn’t cost a thing but adds a lot to your day. I also really enjoy cooking - you can get really creative even when you’re on a budget. And honestly, even on the worst days, my kids make me feel like a million bucks.

Use your peaks to prepare for the valleys. As an entrepreneur in the creative arts, there are many times where the work is seasonal - especially early on when I was just a photographer. There were parts of the year where I would make a lot of money, and then a few months over the winter, business was slow. When I was very young, I would spend what I make, and then struggle in the dry times. As I got older and wiser, I started anticipating the financial valleys and I would put money aside when times were busy to help cover me during those slow spells and that made all the difference in my quality of life just because of the stress it eliminated.

WHO KNOWS HOW TO MAKE A GOOD MARTINI?

Founders House

AN INTERVIEW WITH
DANIELA SIGGIA BEASANT

POLITICAL STRATEGIST, LOBBYIST, CREATIVE DIRECTOR

Daniela Siggia

What does decadent living mean to you?

Making every moment a little cozier, a little special…. not just special occasions, but every single moment.

What are your favourite ways to unwind?

Outside, I love to be outdoors, especially where there is an abundance of nature to photograph. I love taking pictures, they really help me savor special moments and views. I'm also a gardening addict.

What kind of stuff do you splurge on, where you don’t mind spending top dollar?

Food and wine, those are two areas I don’t compromise on. I can also do some serious damage at a garden centre.

What are some of your favorite self-indulgent products that you cannot live without?

I love a good face or body scrub, and therapeutic grade essential oils.

Why do you think it’s important to create a lifestyle that is decadent?

I feel as though if you can make every day a little special, or at least a little cozier, it makes for a delicious life.

What are some activities or products that you enjoy that are actually free or quite affordable when budget is tight that still makes you feel like $1 million?

Long walks are amazing therapy for me, and it doesn’t cost a thing. Homemade spa products are also a decadent treat that cost very little but make you feel pampered.

In closing, any life hacks you wish to share?

Sneak a bit of cozy in every mundane moment and suddenly daily life is a special occasion. You can celebrate every simple moment by making it wonderful.
