What does decadent living mean to you?

What does decadent living mean to you? Enjoying the riches of a successful life, where every square inch of your reality is dripping in opulence? We all look forward to that, but what about on the climb?

For me the concept of decadent living started when I was a starving artist in my 20s. I was broker than broke and my surroundings reflected it. It’s a depressing thing.

In the depth of that grunge, I underwent a serious loss and knew that life was not going to be getting any easier, anytime soon. A girlfriend of mine showed up unexpectedly with a gift. A pair of flannel pajamas, fuzzy slippers, and a book by the author Sark- Change Your Life Without Getting Out Of Bed.

As she handed me the gift, my girlfriend said, ‘life is going to feel like shit for a while so I thought at least you can be cozy.”

She had no idea how those words would change my life. It was like an epiphany.

Up until that point I kept waiting for life to be perfect so I could be happy, and then it occurred to me, life always shows up with some kind of unexpected BS that moves you further away from the ’happy’ goal and the moments in life that do feel perfect, are few and far between… so does that mean that it will be very rare in life that I am happy?

I realized that cozy did not have to be a moment but an entire lifestyle. So then my quest was to take every negative moment and do every little thing I could, to slightly elevate the experience.

I had a long day ahead? At least I could wear my most comfortable outfit, or my favorite pair of socks.

Decadent Living

My crampy little apartment in the worst part of town looked really depressing when the lights were on. So in the evenings, I started using candles and Christmas lights, even in the summer. With the right lighting, even the dumpiest place takes on a different eminence.

I was feeling really sad one night, and knew that I would probably cry myself to sleep. Instead of dreading it, I remember embracing it. I grabbed a comfortable blanket, and put a Kleenex box (the kind with lotion in it) nearby and put on the perfect playlist. I made sure good ice cream was in the freezer… even grieving can be decadent.

I started to turn self-care into a religion - long walks, making myself delicious meals even on a budget, only wearing what’s comfortable - these were all the little things I could do for myself that did not require a lot of money and as soon as I embraced that, I got better, I got stronger and as an indirect result, I started making money and becoming successful.

I also had people around me that were very wealthy and most of them came by their wealth through hard work and from humble beginnings. There were so many simple things they did to enjoy a decadent moment even when they were broke, that set their consciousness up with the feeling of abundance which is then allowed them to attract the opportunities that created real wealth. Fake it until you make it is a thing, and it works.

When we created Decadent Living magazine, we did it obviously wanting to help people celebrate their success and enjoy it in the best way possible, but for those that are just getting started in their professional journey, we also wanted to create a place of inspiration to help you find those little moments / tricks that help you make life just that little bit extra.

For me, decadent living isn’t just about the stuff you buy, or the money you make. It’s about learning how to make simple moments special, and when you can string many special moments into a life, it’s a special life, and a therefore, a happy one.
